Too Busy This Week to type/ More Lanes=Worse Traffic

Sorry, I was going to write a story on the new Earn-A-Bike Co-op, but things have prevented me from doing that.  So this week, I'll simply write a story that confirms my status of reducing driving lanes.  My hope is that one day, the city of San Antonio will have a policy of only allowing two driving lanes of traffic down every stroad it has.  And so here is the latest story from Wired Magazine talking about how having more lanes of traffic simply makes traffic worse.  If you go drive down a freeway or ride your bicycle on Broadway where three lanes are available, you'll see every car racing each other trying to go as fast as it can by getting into not just the right lane, but the available lane that is free or reduce of cars.  For the whole story, please click here:  http://www.wired.com/2014/06/wuwt-traffic-induced-demand/?mbid=social_fb

On a side note, this story also confirms the city's findings on how it was getting safer to DRIVE down S Flores.

Also Via is continuing its input for the the South/West Connector Corridor Study Area by having a online survey.  Please remember, to put in the ideas for Bus Stop Islands And Bike Lids like DART uses in Dallas, TX  at major bus stops while filling out the survey.  To connect the the Survey, please click here:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=498P%2fFAtHTQYxMeDJNmk%2bK2DGZAQ9EtW4KyVtbaQkdQ%3d

S Flores Removal

On Thursday, May 29, 2014, the city council voted 10 to 1 to remove the bicycle lanes, man talk about a vote to Keep San Antonio LAME.  People in the Cycling Community feel anger at those who voted for the removal which is every council person and the mayor except one Shirley Gonzales, District 5 Council Woman.  After pleas from the us, they still voted to remove them.  I have a funny feeling this is not the last one, and we're going to be having this fight again sometime soon. I don't know why our mayor wanted to become Rob Ford, but he did because this crack smoking mayor did the same thing back in 2012.

The people who came out and spoke against the bike lanes were old people from COPS Metro Alliance.  Take a good look at these people, and notice, not one of these people are under the age of 50. What I found very ironic is that these same people just an hour before where complaining about the sprawl and were asking the city council to vote for the SAWS recommendation of fee hikes.  I guess these people didn't get the memo that cars are the thing that is causing the sprawl and not the bicycle, but they simply don't see it that way.

What I also found infuriating was the fact that this guy, Ruben Sauceda brought in another person to testify against the lanes so he could get more time to speak.  You know I was planning to start encouraging my friends to start to visit the grocery store La Fiesta, but since the bicycle lanes are going to be removed, there's simply no need to.  I'm not going to go to a store that thinks that bicycle lanes are a safety hazard when the city's own data said otherwise. I have better places to give my hard earn money to and this store is simply ain't one of them.  I would like to encourage my readers not to visit the La Fiesta on S Flores or any other store but that choice is yours.   Just remember, it was this store that wanted them removed in the first place and where Ruben had people sign his petition.

The last nail in the coffin was a letter from the Harlandale ISD claiming that the bike lanes caused children to run between the cars after school.

Now we lost and yet I have a funny feeling we're going to be facing this all over again pretty soon.  Jim Forsyth of WOAI said it best, "that people who ride the the bus are considered losers" and you can bet that includes people who rides bicycles too.  The cycling community is disorganized and fractured.  We really have no central source to go to or to rally behind.  There's a reason why Austin has all those bicycle lanes, it is because they organized pushed for candidates that supported bicycle lanes and infrastructure.  It's a long road, and I don't think San Antonio has it in us.  I'm not your leader, I'm simply the messenger and you can bet you'll not find any support from BikeTexas.org.  Whether Union de Chicas Ciclistas (UCC) comes through and becomes a voice for the community here is up in the air, but I do have hope.  Look below and see about attending their meeting on Thursday, June 5th.

Also if your hoping to run off District 3 Rebecca J Viagran on her bicycle, then your wasting your time.  Look how round that belly of her's is. I doubt it that she rides at all and when she's does, chances are she puts her bicycles on her car and goes to a park.  She like the rest of the council will not admit it in public, but I believe they consider bicycling a nuisance, something to say they support, but boy they want you to wear a helmet and have the cars share the road and from the looks of the share the road campaign for motorcycles, I don' t think it's working.  I bring it up because I heard from a person or two about this awful ideal.  Although this act cause the former mayor of Los Angele, Antonio Villaraigosa to become more serious about bicycling, I think it's simply two late to change the mind of this council lady.  Although having her actually ride her bicycle would be a start, but I don't think she has the courage to deal with the speeding traffic on Pleasanton let alone on the other stroads in her district.

I hate to tell people, but there's is more people going to ride and your not going to stop them and this story from the Alamo Area MPO is simply confirming I'm seeing now when I'm riding.  Whether we see a news report similar to this one from Australia here is up in the air, however, we'll definitely see what's happening in Chile in the capital city of Santiago happen here in San Antonio.  Actually I already see it downtown especially across the street at the subways after the council's vote.  If you don't want to see this stuff, it's up to people like you to register to vote and actually go vote.  As the election comes closer for the County election, I'll have a chart up on those who support cycling and those who don't. The only way we'll get to see the infrastructure like they have in Austin, or for that matter, the Netherlands, is that we become a force to recon with like COPS Metro Alliance.

As I heard the only person to vote for the lanes, District 5 Council Lady Shirley Gonzales,  I heard the echoes from a Charles Marohn of Strong TownsAnd for the record, she does ride a bicycle.  He came to town back on May the 7th at the Health and the Built Environment and did a presentation.  His presentation starts at 28:30 of the Nowcast video and I urge everyone to watch it.  I don't know how long the lanes will remain, but they won't be removed just yet.  So go an enjoy them because that's the future all over San Antonio.

S Flores Meeting Update....

7.1
For once, and it's good to hear, that there were more cyclist than angry motorist.  And because of that, they cut the meeting 20 minutes early.  I would like to thank all the cyclist that showed up and took time out to show support for the bicycle lane.  Since I wasn't able to go and show my support, I asked three people who went and to tell me what they saw.
Louis R, showed up along with almost 70 supporters of the bicycle lane.  Like him, bike lane supporters warned the crowds that were there for the removal of the bicycle lanes that the cyclist aren't going away.   He heard from the pro-driving crowd that the lanes are unsafe and that they aren't able to drive fast anymore.  Like many others, feels that removing the bicycle lanes is an act of going backwards, not going forward.  He also pointed out that the manager of La Fiesta complains about the bicycle lanes but normally sees at least two bicycles in front of the store.  He told me that maybe the manager should embrace the new lanes and stop complaining about them.
John G also attended the meeting and he uses these lanes every day.  He lives off of Nogalitos and after being run off the road twice on that street, he now goes out of his way and ventures.  He also provided the pictures so in the comment section, please say thanks.  ;)  He said that the manager of La Fiesta is blaming the wrong thing.  He told me that he should be blaming HEB for fewer people going to his grocery store instead of the bicycle lanes.  He also mention the crossing Guard to Morrill Elementry who spoked.  He told me that she was very concerned about the traffic build up and would rather have more traffic flow. But over all she wanted all to be safe. But she does enjoy the cyclist using the bike lanes.
7.2

7.3

7.4
Jenny A was also in attendance at the meeting.  She doesn't live in the are, but would like to live with in the center of the city.  She feels that the alternative route presented at the meeting is a way of the city of San Antonio to indirectly saying to it's citizens that you must own a car.  She saw several people speak including a cyclist who came up to the microphone and said that he goes to La Fiesta, and that store stuck before the bicycle lanes came in.  She was also at the meeting in April and told me that this time the people in attendance were for the bicycle  lanes than against. She also said that she barely heard about the last meeting where back in April, only a small group showed up in support of the bicycle lane.  She also mentioned a old man who spoke in April and

From what I concur from everyone, that this time, a lot of people showed up, brought their bicycles into the cafeteria where the meeting was being held and out numbered the naysayers two to one.  Many of you are apart of the Monday night Zombie Club bicycle ride, and thanks for showing up.  Many of  you pointed out that we cyclist aren't going away and if there's no bicycle lane, we'll be using the full lane.

7.5
But here's my question, such an important meeting for the city and the future of bicycle lanes in the city of San Antonio, why wasn't this meeting posted in the events calendar for the Transportation & Capital Improvement site?  Since the beginning of this, it seems that people within the city government wanted to keep these meeting under the radar from the cycling community.  I heard from my friend Lydia last year that when she attended the very first meeting on these bicycle lanes, she was one of only two people showing support for these lanes.  According to her, she only heard about the meeting at the last minute.  And ever since then, it seems that the city has intentionally kept these meeting from the public.  Just look at this picture from March, 2014 (Image 7.4), as you can see you can see the posting of the meeting for S Flores on March 17th.  But in April (Image 7.5) and May (Image 7.6), you see no mention of such a meeting at Morrill Elementary.

7.6
Now I have no proof other than the pictures I have posted of the Transportation & Capital Improvements (TCI) event calendar that elements of the city tried to keep these meetings under raps.  Now the meetings I've posted come from this page and I can only wonder if more cyclist come to these meetings, that will I see these events not come up anymore.  Because at these meetings, this is where we get the public input on these projects.  This is democracy in action at these meetings and if you don't get your voice in, then your concerns will go unanswered.

The next thing that everyone should do now is contact their council member either by Phone, email or Facebook, and tell them that they should not vote for the removal of the bicycle lanes.  That removing the bicycle lanes is a step in the wrong direction.  I personally am going to contact my member and tell them that removing the bicycle lanes is an act of Keeping San Antonio Lame.  For all those who vote for removing the bicycle lanes, I will personally point that out constantly during election time next year and present a chart similar to what Terri Hall from the Toll Party has in the next election cycle.

Here are some fact that you should mention to your council member when calling them or emailing them:

  • S. Flores is a major traffic corridor that doesn't belong to any one neighborhood. As such, to allow any one neighborhood to dictate the way traffic flows along this citywide thoroughfare is inherently unjust.
  • The local residents claim the bike lanes make the street unsafe. However since the road diet, traffic accidents have been reduced along the stretch of roadway in question.
  • The city's own traffic engineering studies show the road diet did not adversely affect traffic flow.
  • The proposed alternate bike lanes require the spending of anywhere from $480k to $700k to implement and will result in a bike lane that too closely parallels the existing Mission Trail, rendering it largely useless due to its proximity to the much safer off road trail.
  • Instead, spend that $480k+ on left turn arrow lights at key intersections. This is truly the only legitimate complaint local residents have.
  • The road diet was part of the city's master plan which was adopted after lengthy public input over the course of three+ years. Its purpose is to create more, useful and safer multimodal traffic corridors across the ENTIRE city.
  • Such corridors are designed to REDUCE automobile-centric dependency over the longterm, which results in reduced automobile traffic by encouraging walking and cycling for shorter trips. Such activity is in line with both the Mayor's fitness AND clean air campaigns.
And Thank You George L. for these suggestions.

According to the Express News article, the City Council will hear about the bike lanes on May 29th.  If any event comes along.  I'll be keeping you informed.

The proposal is to be rerouted a mile and a half away from S Flores to Mission Rd.  As for boycotting La Fiesta, well inner city neighborhoods now a days lack grocery stores but if the lanes get removed, well I guess having a lousy grocery store go out of business might be a good thing.  I'll feel sorry for the residence who will have to travel further to get food.

Keep San Antonio Lame

I don't think you have heard,  but the City of San Antonio is planning to use money that is set aside for bicycle lanes and other cool bicycle related infrastructure to remove the best job that they ever did, the S Flores Bike Lanes.
4.1

Stuff like this goes to the saying I've used over and over again, Keep San Antonio Lame (Image 4.1) because I know of no other way to express my disgust at the stupidity this city does to something that's real cool. There's tons and tons of examples that I have yet to write about on how lousy this city is when it was comes to providing pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.  But the blame should not go entirely to the government organizations that built the infrastructure, but the people who use the sidewalks and bicycle lanes on not speaking out against this travesty that has been built for you.
Over the years, I've attended a number of planning meetings ranging from parks to highway to general MPO long range planning meetings.  Most of the time, I've been the only one showing up by bicycle and the Via bus thus been your de-facto voice for these issues, but no longer.  Now being ever present and punctual to these meetings have come to a end. My job at the airport prevents me from attending these meetings that normally take place at 6pm.   It is up to the people reading this blog. to take my place and represent those who walk, use Via, and ride bicycle in this city.  If you don't think you have the power to make a difference, think again.  I've seen the changes and a lot of time it was because I attended these meetings.

The S Flores meeting will take place on May 19th at 6 pm at Morrill Elementary cafeteria. 5200 S Flores St, San Antonio, TX 78214    The CoSA is Presenting an Alternative to the existing bicycle lane which I guarantee you has nothing to do with a cycletrack down S Flores but useless sharrows. When you go to these meetings do the following....

  • Be courteous and polite
  • When speaking to the meeting holders keep it short and sweet. Do not go off on tangents and stick to the points. The last thing you want to look is dumb, stupid and angry.
  • Also bring handouts of pictures and facts to more clearly get your message out. A good example of this is what the Toll Party hands out at Streetcar planning meetings
  • Just follow these simple rules and your message will be heard. And be patient for the results.
From now on I'll be posting these meetings that cyclist and friends of cyclist should attend. And if you don't know what to say, contact me and I'll help.
I also need people to go to these meetings to take pictures and get me information on what is going on. With your help, I can write the stories and provide you with a point of view that you'll not hear anywhere else unless you live in a place New York or any where else Streetblog is representing a community because I am your streetblog here in San Antonio, TX.   This blog is my way of being that voice for cyclist and pedestrians.

An Introduction and South Flores Success

Image 1.1
For years, I've wanted to fix the lousy infrastructure that we build for bicycles and for that matter, everyone that doesn't own a car. A friend of mine said that I should start an activist group, but my time with Smart Transit SA, (a pro-transit group) told me that we're all to busy to maintain a group, and most of all, most people that are interested, wouldn't know what to ask for or how to explain what is wrong with the current built environment. This is similar to what Steve Jobs said about the iPod.  He said that before he invented the iPod, people wouldn't ask for an iPod, but would have asked for a better CD player.   This blog is dedicated to pointing out the flaws, the idiotic designs that we have to deal with on a daily basis as cyclist and pedestrians and going to explain what could be done better to fix the current infrastructure. So instead of asking for a better CD player, those of us who are willing to be the voice for cyclist and a better San Antonio can now ask for an better iPod.

Also as a side note, this blog will be also reporting on the bicycling culture that exist here in San Antonio, Texas from time to time.  For right now, I'll be posting a story every Saturday or Sunday, so you'll get a lot of content in the next few weeks.
Image 1.2

Sometimes the city does something good, but seem to screw up a small section just to make sure that cars can go faster.  So far, in my opinion, the best thing the city of San Antonio has done has put a bicycle lane down South Flores St from Nogalitos to SE Military Dr.  For once, the city have finally put down a bicycle lane where one needs to be.  They even put up no parking signs along the street always keeping the lane readily available to use.  (Image 1.1)
Image 1.3
Image 1.4

Two problem exist on the existing lane.  Problem one is the placement of the Bicycle Lane Ends sign (image 1.3)  which is obscured by a tree.(Image 1.4)   It should be placed one block south at Clay St.

Problem two is the intersection of Probandt and S Flores.  Instead of actually keeping the bicycle lanes there, they decided to take out the bike lanes and put in a right turn lane going northbound.  You'll see this riding in the bicycle lane southbound, you'll come to a line cutting the bike lane (Image 1.5) and making way for the driving lane.  I don't know why they couldn't put up an sign alerting cyclist and drivers alike allowing cyclist to merge, but this is San Antonio, Keep San Antonio Lame.  If you happen to encounter this while riding your bicycle, simply put out your left hand like your about to make a left turn and merge as safely as you can, put your bicycle in the center of the lane until the bike lane comes again on the other side and go back into your lane.(Image 1.6).
Image 1.5
Image 1.6

And now the problem becomes more clear as your coming northbound on Flores.  As you come along, your bicycle  lane gives way to a right turn lane. (Image 1.7, Image 1.8)  If the City of San Antonio had any sense, they would have took the time out and had the bicycle lane go through the turn lane like other cities have done when doing the same problem including Austin, Texas. (Image 1.9, Image 1.10) They did this so cars, not people, not cyclist would have a quick way to leave the neighborhood (rolls eyes).  Probandt is the only street on the southside that connects to US90/I-10 freeway, no naturally, they need to make sure every one driving can get out of the southside as fast as they can. If you encounter this while riding your bicycle, simply stay in the right turn lane and treat it as you would a regular bicycle lane.  Simply wait for the light to turn green and continue as nothing has changed.

Image 1.10

Lets give credit where credit is due, the city of San Antonio actually put a bicycle lane where the the bicycle lane was needed (WHICH IS NOT LAME) and not on some side neighborhood street like South Main Ave where there's no problems with heavy traffic, (WHICH IS LAME) which my next blog, next week will be all about.  The best of all, they actually put in no parking signs which is a very good thing and keeps the lane clear.  The only sad thing is that because several business fail to see how better S Flores is, the city is now considering removing the lanes.(Image 1.11)  I hope people will come out and attend this meeting, but we cyclist are just to few and we don't have the time or the effort to get out and tell how good this is.  I don't live in the neighborhood and I work when the next meeting is taking place.  If we lose these lanes, it will be so Lame.  So Transportation & Capital Improvements, please get rid of the bike lanes so you guys can KEEP San Antonio LAME.

If anybody want to sign a petition to keep the lanes, please visit this website.  http://www.biketexas.org/advocacy/petitions/south-flores-bike-lanes
