Bicycle Questions

A. Will you as Mayor/Councilman implement the Bicycle Master Plan throughout the city/in your district?
Answer:  YES
Explanation: I will advocate for bicycle amenities and infrastructure within my district and throughout the city.

B. Will you vote to remove a bicycle lane?
Answer:  NO
Explanation: It is a priority for me to make sure that all streets in San Antonio are bike-friendly, and that all existing bike lanes are safe for bicyclists.

C. Will you make it illegal to park a car in the bicycle lane?
Answer:  YES
Explanation: We should explore all options to make San Antonio a more bike-friendly city.

D. Will you make sure Broadway has a protected bicycle lane from Houston to Hildebrand?
Answer:  YES
Explanation: I will support safe bicycle amenities in all parts of San Antonio.

E. Will you insist on new developments to include bike infrastructure such as a bicycle lane, mix used 10ft paths, and bicycle racks?
Answer:  YES
Explanation: I will work to integrate safe bicycle infrastructure into new developments.

F. Will you amend Sec. 19-286. Driving or parking on sidewalks prohibited, so people can ride their bicycles on the sidewalk?
Answer:  NO
Explanation: We would need to evaluate bicycles on sidewalks on a case-by-case basis as it is important to balance pedestrian safety and bicycle safety.

G. Do you support a city ordinance that prevents any further Development of park or green space lands for development of sports fields?
Answer:  NO
Explanation: It is important to preserve park space for use by any community member. On some occasions converting parks to sports fields has limited public access to parks. I would seek to ensure that public spaces remain accessible to all city residents.

H. Will you either amend or repeal Sec. 22-28. Public parks hours of operation and curfew, so people can use the Howard W. Peak Greenway trails after dark?
Answer:  Yes
Explanation: I think it would be great to ensure that the public has access to our parks at all hours, but we also want to make sure that people are safe when they are using public facilities. If we can ensure people’s safety, then I would consider amending this section.

VIA Questions

I. Are you willing to look for more funding options to improve and expand VIA bus service?
Answer:  YES
Explanation:

J. Will you support free bus rides for all residents of SA?
Answer:  No
Explanation: While free bus rides could encourage more ridership, we need to consider that this is a revenue source for our bus system, and without it our bus system could be further compromised. I would support having select days be “free-rider days”, such as ozone action days, holidays, and election days, etc.

K. Are you willing to bring Light Rail to a vote?
Answer:  Yes
Explanation: Based on the voter’s direction, voter approval is required before establishing light rail. I think there are many improvements that can be made to existing public transportation options to bolster public confidence in the value of a public transportation system before we put this matter before them again.
